Ward-based clinical mentorship supports hands-on training and improves OB/GYN practice in Zambia
The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ECSACOG) continues to deliver impactful mentorship through clinical ward rounds at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia. This mentorship initiative is part of ECSACOG’s ongoing efforts to build capacity and strengthen practical, patient-centered training for OB/GYN residents across the region.
Ward-based mentorship allows trainees to engage directly with patients under the guidance of experienced faculty and ECSACOG-appointed mentors. It enhances their clinical reasoning, diagnostic confidence, bedside manner, and decision-making — all critical for delivering safe and effective women’s healthcare.
During the rounds, mentors provide real-time feedback, demonstrate evidence-based management, and model professional conduct. These sessions not only reinforce textbook knowledge but also expose residents to the nuances of patient care, interdisciplinary teamwork, and ethical considerations in clinical settings.
Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital remains a key ECSACOG-accredited training site in Zambia, and its commitment to mentorship and bedside teaching reflects the high standards upheld by the College.
By investing in hands-on, in-service mentorship, ECSACOG ensures that OB/GYN trainees are well-prepared to meet the demands of modern clinical practice — and more importantly, to transform outcomes for women and families across the region.
