Kamuzu Central and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospitals gain regional recognition for advancing OB/GYN specialist training
Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre have officially been accredited as training sites by the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ECSACOG). This milestone marks a significant step forward in strengthening Malawi’s capacity to train future specialists in reproductive, maternal, and newborn health.
The ECSACOG accreditation visits took place in June 2025, assessing both institutions against rigorous criteria that include clinical service quality, academic infrastructure, supervisory capacity, and trainee support systems. These evaluations confirmed that both hospitals meet the required standards to provide high-quality postgraduate training in obstetrics and gynecology.
Kamuzu Central Hospital, the main referral facility in Malawi’s central region, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, the largest tertiary facility in the southern region, are now formally recognised as part of ECSACOG’s regional training network. Both hospitals have longstanding roles in clinical education and service delivery and are pivotal in addressing maternal health challenges in Malawi.
With this accreditation, trainees in Malawi will benefit from a harmonised curriculum, structured assessments, and mentorship under ECSACOG’s standards. The inclusion of both hospitals significantly enhances local training opportunities and contributes to building a sustainable workforce of qualified OB/GYN specialists across the country.
The accreditation of Kamuzu and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospitals demonstrates ECSACOG’s commitment to expanding equitable access to high-quality specialist training in women’s health. It reflects the growing momentum in Malawi and the region to invest in professional excellence and strengthen health systems through education.
