From Rwanda to Tanzania, Uganda to Zambia and Zimbabwe to Kenya, ECSACOG reinforces its commitment to hands-on mentorship, strengthening the next generation of OB/GYN specialists across the region.
Between 04 February to 24 March 2025, ECSACOG conducted a series of Clinical and Research Mentorship visits across six key training institutions in six countries. These visits form part of the College’s ongoing strategy to enhance the practical training and research capacity of its trainees, ensuring a competent and confident OB/GYN workforce.
In Rwanda, mentorship sessions were held at King Faisal Hospital and Rwanda Military Hospital in Kigali, Rwanda to enhance academic and professional development among trainees by providing structured support in both research and clinical practice. Through this mentorship, trainees are guided in formulating research questions, developing proposals, and advancing their clinical competencies under the supervision of experienced specialists.
In Tanzania, mentorship sessions were held at Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital and Bugando Medical Centre, where trainees received focused support in critical areas including vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) repair, ultrasound scanning, and the management of antepartum haemorrhage (APH). These hands-on trainings are essential for improving maternal care and outcomes in the region.
In Uganda, ECSACOG mentors engaged with trainees at Mbarara and Mbale Regional Referral Hospitals. The programme focused on building research competencies alongside clinical acumen, fostering a strong foundation in both academic inquiry and service delivery.
Kitwe Teaching Hospital in Zambia hosted ECSACOG mentors Dr. Shanzi, Dr. Chiwora, and Dr. Mwanza, who led comprehensive mentorship activities designed to elevate the clinical and research proficiency of local trainees.
In Zimbabwe, a successful visit to Gweru Provincial Hospital provided Year I trainees with essential surgical experience, including participation in caesarean section procedures under expert supervision. This direct exposure helps build clinical confidence and reinforces ECSACOG’s commitment to practical, skills-based learning.
Meanwhile, in Kenya, ECSACOG concluded impactful mentorship visits at Tenwek and Kijabe Hospitals. Trainees were supported in developing their clinical judgment and research projects, reinforcing the College’s regional goal of producing well-rounded, innovative OB/GYN specialists.
These multi-country mentorship visits reflect ECSACOG’s dedication to strengthening maternal healthcare through sustained investment in clinical excellence and scholarly growth. The College will continue to prioritise mentorship as a cornerstone of its training programme, ensuring high standards and regional impact.
